This is a topic I see a lot around the internet and particularly on the /r/homelab subreddit so I figured I’d chime in with my professional opinion.
VMware ESXi 6.7 is an entirely free to use bare-metal hypervisor which includes powerful virtualization, networking, and storage capabilities.
I’ve managed to finish migrating all of my VMs to the new DL380 G7 ESXi Host. Afterwards, I found some time to sit down and draw a quick network diagram. I then posted this diagram to an online forum and received some good questions & suggestions.
Managed to pick up a “new” DL380 G7 from the local classifieds today! This bad boy is going to be the new ESXi host for my lab, replacing the DL360 G7! But why bother “upgrading”?..
